Russia Launches Hypersonic Missile at Dnipro Amid Escalation in Ukraine Conflict

The strike comes in response to what Putin described as the United States and United Kingdom enabling Kyiv to target Russian territory with advanced Western weaponry.
Addressing the nation, Putin characterized the ongoing conflict as having “acquired elements of a global character” and announced that civilians would be given prior warnings in future strikes involving similar advanced weapons systems.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the missile attack, labeling it a “clear and severe escalation” and urging strong international condemnation. "Right now, there is no strong reaction from the world,” Zelenskyy lamented, calling for a unified global response to the heightened aggression.
While Ukrainian officials initially suggested that the weapon used might have been an intercontinental ballistic missile—typically reserved for long-range nuclear strikes—NATO and U.S. officials corroborated Russia’s claim that it was an intermediate-range missile with a range of 3,000 to 5,500 kilometers (1,860–3,415 miles). An anonymous U.S. official told Reuters that Moscow had notified Washington of the strike beforehand, while another confirmed that the U.S. had briefed Kyiv and its allies about the potential use of such weapons.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported intercepting two British-made Storm Shadow cruise missiles launched by Ukrainian forces. In response, Russia’s ambassador to the U.K., Andrei Kelin, accused Britain of being "directly involved in this war."
Amid these tensions, Russia also criticized the recent establishment of a U.S. ballistic missile defense base in northern Poland, warning that it increases the overall nuclear threat in the region. Polish officials, however, dismissed Moscow’s warnings, asserting that such threats only bolster the argument for NATO’s defensive measures.
As the situation intensifies, calls for a diplomatic resolution remain muted, with both sides showing no signs of backing down in the increasingly globalized conflict.
