Between Promise and Precarity: Migration to the Gulf States

  For decades, the Gulf States  including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman  have been magnets for migrant labor. From gleaming skyscrapers to sprawling desert cities, the region’s rapid economic growth has depended heavily on the contributions of millions of migrant workers, primarily from South and Southeast Asia, and increasingly from parts of Africa. Yet behind the promise of opportunity lies a complex reality shaped by economic demand, sponsorship systems, and fragile labor protections. The Economic Pull of the Gulf The discovery of oil transformed the Gulf States into some of the world’s wealthiest nations.
